States Continue to Add Laws Banning Wireless Use by Drivers

"Across the U.S. more laws are being adopted restricting the use of wireless phones by drivers. Colorado, Delaware, Maryland and Tennessee banned wireless phone use by young drivers. Chicago, New York, New Jersey and Washington D.C. have banned all drivers from using wireless handheld phones. However, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association, it's difficult to create these laws. 'You can't have a law for every distracting behavior behind the wheel,' says Jonathan Adkins, spokesman for the Governors Highway Safety Association. 'You're not going to ban eating or talking to your kids.' (Source: USA Today 1, USA Today 2)"

From the CTIA newswire - more states continue jumping on the bandwagon. I must admit that this one seems like an easy - "look we ARE doing something" - scapegoat for legislature. On the other hand, this helps the hands-free market and maybe encourages people to use the handsfree option and keeping their hands on the wheel. Regardless, the most distracting thing about using cell phones is actually talking (or texting) on them. The action of holding them is far less distracting. Banning talking is far harder though and if we were to, we would have to ban eating and putting make up on as well. Commuters will object ;)
