Concerns at A.C.L.U. Over Document Shredding
Concerns at A.C.L.U. Over Document Shredding - New York Times. Last week, the annual ACLU membership letter came in the mail. For the first time in years, I didn't even open it. This is sad. Sad because I've been a supporter of this organization for years. Sad because it illustrates just how fragile we all are under the pressure of digitizing and the allure of the data-glut. Six months ago ACLU was caught trying to collect a large amount of information on their donors in order to "make their donation requests more efficient" - i.e. they wanted to know who to go to when they needed to beg for large sums of money. Somehow, this just doesn't sound good when we are talking about the organization that touts its horn about privacy on a daily basis. Now this shredding business as the last in a series of screw ups... It's hard to know what to do really... I would like to trust ACLU as at least one of the few organizations that puts honesty and integrity at the top of the list of its values. Trust is a tough thing to gain though, especially if its foundations have been shaken... Sad
