From the CTIA newswire, this article does a really nice job impassively describing the current issues with allowing cell phone use on airplanes. Personally, I actually really enjoy the enforced rule of no phones on planes as it gives me an excellent excuse not to call anyone and spend however many hours doing work, sleeping, reading, watching movies - a perfectly excusable absence from the social sphere that is my phone. Planes also tend to be very cramped spaces. Just imagine sitting next to someone who manages to spend most of the flight chatting away on their phone. That's continuous conversation next to you ear... I suspect this may be rather irritating. Another aspect of being allowed to use phones on the plane is the social expectation of the use of idle time. If my friends and family know that I am about to spend 2-5 hours on the plane, they may construe this as "idle time" when i am available for conversation. Such social expectations would keep me from turning off my phone as such an act is often construed as "agressive". So... they think they can call me and there goes my nap... hmmm... sometimes, quiet spaces are necessary.
